The Microcurrent FaceLift and Microcurrent Therapy

What Is Microcurrent Facial Treatment?

The microcurrent facial is a relatively new non-invasive therapeutic treatment that delivers safe, painless, low-level electrical impulses to strategic locations under the skin to rehabilitate, firm and tone the facial muscles on both an immediate and long-term basis. The technology simultaneously repairs collagen in the dermis (the deepest layer of the skin), while gently erasing signs of aging in the epidermis (the top layer of skin).

As we age, our electrical impulses can slow down causing aging and sagging facial skin. Microcurrent therapy works in harmony with the natural bio-electrical currents naturally found in our bodies to help speed up the natural regenerative process resulting in firmer, healthier, more youthful looking skin.

Microcurrent Facial Devices For Home Use

At one time, microcurrent facial treatment was exclusively offered through day/medical spas, dermatologists and plastic surgeons offices. Harnessing the benefits of the same professional strength technology, several very effective microcurrent facial devices for home treatment have recently emerged such as the NuFACE®.

Based on the successful principles of the Micro-Dermal Tone Technique, NuFACE is the only hand-held microcurrent facial device approved by the FDA for home facial toning treatment. It produces a low level of alternating electrical current emitted through dual spherical probes in which the user glides along the contour of the face. Portable microcurrent treatment devices such as NuFACE not only allow the convenience and privacy of in home treatment, but also offer a significant savings over regular professional treatments received at a spa or salon or doctor's office.

Remember: "True" microcurrent uses less than 500 microamperes (Ua). Only true, quality, professional-grade microcurrent facial toning devices such as NuFace® use 0-500 microamps for optimal effectiveness and should never cause an actual "visual" contraction of the facial muscle.

The History Of Microcurrent Therapy

In 1980, Thomas W. Wing. D.C., N.D., LAc., a fifth generation Chinese Doctor is credited with introducing a microcurrent instrument which was found to be beneficial in the treatment of muscles. Originally approved by the FDA as a muscle stimulator, it also found new life in the Cosmetology industry for cellular rejuvenation, facial toning and wrinkle reduction.

Microcurrent techniques have been proven successful in treating a variety of medical conditions including Bell’s Palsy. Bell’s Palsy is facial paralysis and usually effects one side of the face only. The cause is unknown, but inflammation of one of the facial nerves results in muscle paralysis to one side of the face. This usually recovers over a period of months, but on occasions can be permanent.

Electrical currents have been incorporated into facial machines for many years. The research and development conducted to assist the “baby boomers” in maintaining a youthful appearance has promoted their evolution to the highly efficient apparatuses we have at our disposal today. Understandably, there is a great deal of interest around the muscle enhancement abilities of microcurrent.

Microcurrent is an electric current facial toning treatment that promotes collagen and elastin production in your skin, and has the ability to dramatically increase ATP production. ATP is basically the vitality of your cells. The buildup in ATP explains the lasting effects of microcurrent on re-educating the facial muscles to tighten and tone. To quote D. Tsoklis, an expert on the subject, “Microcurrent is the reproduction of your own biological current. As we age, this current, which sends messages from the brain to the muscles via the spinal cord, does not send those messages properly.”

Microcurrent facials restore those messages from the brain to tell the skin to rejuvenate. It helps tone facial muscles by replicating our own biological currents. Clinical studies have shown that after twenty days of treatment collagen production increases by 14 percent, elastin increases by 48 percent, and blood circulation increases by 38 percent. Scientists have also found that microcurrent facial treatments trigger the body’s production of amino acids and ATP. Both of these accelerate cell repair and promote healthier cell production.

How Do Microcurrent Facial Devices and Machines Work?

The microcurrent facial involves the use of safe, painless, low-level, waveform-shaped currents (electrical impulses) which work to “reprogram” the muscles to nearly original muscle shape. The gentle electrical impulses created by the microcurrent facial toner treatment head actually rehabilitate the muscles and improve circulation, texture, tone, and fine lines. Regular use of microcurrent will continue to provide muscle strength and restore freshness to appearance.

Microcurrent “recharges” facial tissue by combining a unique electrical waveform using dual tipped probes, in combination with a conductive gel and the naturally occurring biological current of the body. This technology has the capacity to work internally on the muscle fiber and tissue for visible, external results – it's almost like taking your face to the gym! The combination of different frequency variations allows these machines to show great results in tissue enhancement and repair. The frequency variation in the current can be concentrated on specific tissues and adapted to the individual needs of each client. The microcurrent utilized produce different effects on the muscle and the tissue of the skin.

Microcurrent facial devices can be used to improve the muscle reception and re-educate the muscle to respond more effectively to regular nerve stimulation. The desired relaxed state of a muscle is semi-contracted, allowing it to function effectively. The microcurrent can help bring this “memory” back to the muscle, giving better tone to the face and relaxing over contracted muscles. To the patient this means a firmer facial tonus and diminished lines.

Microcurrent used for the purpose of skin rejuvenation is quite different from Electro-Muscle Stimulation (E.M.S.) which is a medical procedure utilizing a very strong current to force repeated muscular contraction and expansion.

What Are The Benefits Of Microcurrent Facial Treatment?

Microcurrent facial toning treatment delivers a variety of benefits to patients who wish to maintain a more youthful looking appearance and is an extremely safe and gentle non-invasive alternative to dramatic plastic surgery procedures, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, Collagen and Botox injections and other invasive treatments. The results can vary by individual and skin type, are gradual, and will not just "happen" over night. Although microcurrent facial treatment has been known to produce an immediate and temporary rejuvenating effect, continued daily application will provide more cumulative long-term, lasting results!

  • Improves facial and neck muscle tone
  • Lifts jowls and eyebrows
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduces puffiness
  • Evens out skin tone and smoothes texture
  • Improves facial circulation
  • Aids in skin exfoliation
  • Encourages lymphatic drainage
  • Increases product penetration
  • Acts as a sun damage treatment
  • Reduces cellulite
  • Enhances the body’s natural collagen and elastin production
  • Re-hydrates skin
  • Increase cellular metabolism (ATP)
  • Tightens enlarged pores

Are Microcurrent Facials Safe?

Microcurrent facelift treatment is considered a safe and gentle therapeutic approach to skin rejuvenation however the following precautions should always be taken:

  • Do not use if you are pregnant
  • Do not use if you have a cardiac pacemaker or history of heart disease
  • Do not use if you have been diagnosed with cancer or tumors
  • Do not use if you have implanted defibrillators/stimulators or other devices
